The complicated order and disorder near framework boron sites in both borosilicates were characterized at the molecular level by using a combination of multi-dimensional solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy techniques and first-principles calculations. Specifically, two-dimensional (2D) solid-state J-mediated (through-bond) 11B{29Si} NMR analyses provide direct and local information on framework boron sites that are covalently bonded to silicon sites through bridging oxygen atoms. The resolution and identification of correlated signals from distinct 11B-O-29Si site pairs reveal distinct distributions of boron heteroatoms in layered borosilicate frameworks synthesized with the different C16H33N+Me3 and C16H33N+Me2Et structure-directing surfactant species. The analyses establish that boron atoms are distributed non-selectively among different types of silicon sites in the layered C16H33N+Me3-directed borosilicate framework, whereas boron atoms are preferentially incorporated into incompletely condensed Q3-type sites in the C16H33N+Me2Et-directed borosilicate material. Interestingly, framework boron species appear to induce framework condensation of their next-nearest-neighbor silicon sites in the C16H33N+Me3-directed borosilicate. By comparison, the incorporation of boron atoms is found to preserve the topology of the C16H33N+Me2Et-directed borosilicate frameworks. The differences in boron site distributions and local boron-induced structural transformations for the two surfactant-directed borosilicates appear to be due to different extents of cross-linking of the siliceous frameworks. The molecular-level insights are supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which show the distinct influences of boron atoms on the C16H33N+Me3- and C16H33N+Me2Et-directed borosilicate frameworks, consistent with the experimental observations.2588

Here, we reveal the existence of characteristic lithium defect environments in the crystalline lithium-ion battery electrode LiVPO4F and establish the relative proximities between them. Well-crystallized LiVPO4F samples were synthesized with the expected tavorite-like structure, as established by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) measurements. Solid-state 7Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra reveal unexpected paramagnetic 7Li environments that can account for up to 20% of the total lithium content. Multi-dimensional and site-selective solid-state 7Li NMR experiments using finite-pulse radio-frequency-driven recoupling (fp-RFDR), which recouple through-space 7Li magnetic dipolar interactions, establish unambiguously that the unexpected lithium environments are associated with defects within the LiVPO4F crystal structure. The lithium defects exhibit local electronic environments that are distinct from lithium ions in the crystallographic LiVPO4F site, which result from altered oxidation and/or spin states of nearby paramagnetic vanadium atoms. The results provide a general strategy for identifying and characterizing sub-nanometer-scale defects in lithium-containing crystalline solids, including paramagnetic materials with short 7Li NMR relaxation times on the order of milliseconds.2564

Here we introduce a new concept to achieve ultimate transparency reaching the theoretical limit. We use a controlled degree of chemical disorder in the structure to obtain optical isotropy at the micrometer length scale. This approach can be applied in the case of anisotropic structures and micrometer scale crystal size ceramics. We thus report Sr1+x/2Al2+xSi2−xO8 (0 < x ≤ 0.4) readily scalable polycrystalline ceramics elaborated by full and congruent crystallization from glass. These materials reach 90% transmittance. This innovative method should drive the development of new highly transparent materials with technologically relevant applications.106

We present a new protocol that combines long- and short-range structural constraints from diffraction and solid-state NMR techniques, respectively, to determine the molecular structure of layered silicates in the presence of various extents of stacking disorder. Solid-state 29Si NMR data are largely insensitive to the incomplete extent of three-dimensional (3D) crystallinity that limits the interpretation of diffraction data alone to the identification of possible unit cells and space groups. State-of-the-art NMR crystallography techniques consequently provide a simplified view of materials from which candidate framework structures can be built and evaluated based on local structural constraints, including interatomic distances, Si site numbers and multiplicities, and Si−O−Si connectivities, and refined using density functional theory. This protocol was applied to a new layered silicate material named CLS-1, of composition [Si5O11H][C9N2H15]·1.9(H2O), synthesized by using a fluoride-based protocol and cationic alkylaminopyridinium as a structure-directing agent (SDA). Despite the intrinsic complexity and partial ordering of the intersheet arrangements and organic−inorganic interactions, this led to the identification of a single space group that is compatible with both NMR and diffraction data, from which the silicate framework structure could be established,. The remarkable similarities between the layered framework structures of CLS-1, HUS-2 (Tsunoji et al. J. Mater. Chem. 2012, 22, 13682), and another layered silicate material with a radically different morphology and extent of stacking order and interlayer dynamics, established by using a similar approach (Brouwer et al. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2013, 135, 5641), point to the remarkable robustness of this previously unknown silicate framework type.13133814

First, the measurement of the spin–lattice relaxation (T1) in such glasses without added paramagnetic impurities helps for the identification of phase separation and of small Q4 clusters. Second, two-dimensional 29Si–29Si correlation experiments characterize the Si-O-Si network after various heat treatments and are used to obtain the compositions of the two demixing phases. The first phase is made of nearly pure silica (SiO2) and the second with a composition that tends towards the Na2Si2O5 composition. A link can be made with the crystallizing phases when longer heat-treatments are applied.2588

This precipitation is conducted by chemical reduction of gold ions with stannous or antimony oxides as reducing agents. A control of the rendered coloration between blank to red shades has been obtained using Sb2O3 agent and appropriate thermal treatments. The glasses remain colorless while heating up to 450°C. Structural glasses evolution is studied by MAS NMR spectroscopy of 29Si and 23Na nuclei to investigate the silicate network polymerization change and the modification of sodium/oxygen bond length versus nucleation state and growth of Au nanoparticles. A clear decrease of the Q2 species part is observed with nanoparticles growth, confirmed by the evolution of chemical shift for 23Na resonance. A slight network polymerization is then showed, independently of the only - thermal treatment. This structural change could be induced by the antimony oxidation and change towards higher coordinations. Finally the glasses chemical durability has been studied by leaching tests and shows lower alteration for colored glass. The optical spectroscopy applied to colored glasses has given rise to plasmon resonance phenomena at around 600 nm which is the typical surface plasmon resonance of gold for a refractive medium index of 1.5, with a shift of the resonance towards the higher wavelengths with increasing thermal treatment temperature. This shift is modelised by Drude and MIE approaches and confirms the trend observed by UV-Visible measurement with an increasing absorption at the SPR correlated to a typical Oswald growth mechanism according to the increase of the annealing temperature.106630

Dissolution of phosphates in melt-quenched silicate glasses raises the question of chemical homogeneity and possible formation of clusters. A detailed structural characterization of the bioactive glasses is thus highly desirable. In this work, the nature of the distribution of phosphate units in a melt-quenched bioactive glass is elucidated for the first time using 31P spin-counting solid-state NMR experiments. The structure of a dense bioactive calcium silicate glass with 2.6 mol.% of phosphorus oxide is shown to exhibit nanometric-sized chemical and structural heterogeneities. Clear experimental evidences for the presence of phosphate clusters of five and six PO4 tetrahedral units embedded in the disordered polymeric silicate network are given.106

The resulting Zn1+xGa2−2x(Ge/Sn)xO4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5) spinel solid solutions synthesized here by a classic solid state method have been structurally characterized by X-ray and neutron powder diffraction refinements coupled to 71Ga solid state NMR studies. In contrast to ZnGa2O4:Cr3+ for which long lasting luminescence properties have been reported to arise from tetrahedral positively charged defects resulting from the spinel inversion, our results show that a different mechanism occurs complementary for Zn1+xGa2−2x(Ge/Sn)xO4. Here, the great enhancement of the brightness and decay time of the long lasting luminescence properties is directly driven by the substitution mechanism which creates distorted octahedral sites surrounded by octahedral Ge and Sn positive substitutional defects which likely act as new efficient traps.103414

MAS and MQ-MAS NMR confirmed that four kinds of oxide-ion sites are present in the structure and showed a small extra peak (&lt; 1%) possibly due to an interstitial site. The high-temperature measurements showed that the line shape changed and sharpened with increasing temperature from 200 °C, and the peak position shifted at 700 °C. The comparison of the results between MAS NMR (room-temperature) and HT static NMR showed the exchange of oxide ions bonded to Si (O1, O2, and O3) but the apparent exchange between the oxide ions (O1, O2, and O3) and the oxide ion at the isolated site (O4) is not observed. The exchange of the oxide ions that are bonded to Si (O1, O2, and O3) suggests that they are the main diffusion species in oxide-ion conductivity.1310748

For most of the studied compounds, the geometry optimization step improves significantly the accuracy of the calculations and good correlations between experimental and calculated 25Mg chemical shifts and quadrupolar coupling constants were achieved showing that this approach can be used to obtain unambiguous assignments of the 25Mg resonances in more complex phosphate compounds. The possibility of recording natural abundance 25Mg NMR spectra in materials with very low Mg content is illustrated for a 10% Mg-substituted hydroxyapatite sample. In this case, the distribution of 25Mg quadrupolar coupling measured experimentally has been compared with values previously calculated for several structural models. The results suggest that more complex structural models must be developed to improve the understanding of the Ca/Mg substitution on the basis of 25Mg NMR data. 24

A revised composition is proposed based on Solid-State NMR results that allow the identification and quantification of the signatures of otherwise undetectable non-crystalline impurities, thus largely complementing the traditional elemental analyses. Solid-state 1H NMR at fast magic-angle spinning (MAS) and high magnetic field provide quantitative information on intra- and inter-layer local environments that are crucial for the determination of the amount of Mg/Al substitution within the octahedral layer. In combination with DFT calculations of energies, it suggests that pairs of adjacent Mg atoms are unfavorable, leading to a non-random cationic distribution within the layers.24

While 27Al solid state NMR spectroscopy would be a method of choice, it has been difficult to apply this technique because of large quadrupolar broadenings. Here from a combined use of the highest stable field NMR instruments (17.6, 20.0 and 23.5 T) and ultra-fast magic angle spinning (>60 kHz), high quality spectra were obtained, allowing isotropic chemical shifts, quadrupolar couplings and asymmetric parameters to be extracted. Combined with first principle calculations, these NMR signatures were then assigned to actual structures of surface aluminum sites. For silica (here SBA-15) reacted with triethylaluminum, the surface sites are in fact mainly dinuclear Al species, grafted on the silica surface via either two terminal or two bridging siloxy ligands. Tetrahedral sites, resulting from the incorporation of Al inside the silica matrix, are also seen as minor species. No evidence for putative tri-coordinated Al atoms has been found.1310748

In this work, we demonstrate that the combination of 29Si and 23Na NMR at high magnetic field and DFT calculations makes it possible to revisit the assignment of the NMR signature of δ-Na2Si2O5 polymorph. Then, after performing the D-HMQC experiment on this crystalline sample, we identified lineshape distortions on the 23Na spectra extracted from this 2D map. Numerical simulations showed that these distortions results to an effect of the relative orientation between the 23Na quadrupolar tensor and the 23Na-29Si dipolar vector at the origin of the magnetization transfer.24

Its crystal structure has been resolved by combining neutron and synchrotron powder diffraction data refinements (Pnma, a = 6.46281(2) Å, b = 3.86498(1) Å, c = 16.17629(4) Å, Z=4). One dimensional 87Rb, 139La and 19F MAS NMR spectra have been recorded and are in agreement with the proposed structural model. Assignment of the 19F resonances is performed on the basis of both 19F-139La J-coupling multiplet patterns observed in a heteronuclear DQfiltered J-resolved spectrum and 19F-87Rb HMQC MAS experiments. DFT calculations of both the 19F isotropic chemical shieldings and the 87Rb, 139La electric field gradient tensors using the GIPAW and PAW methods implemented in the CASTEP code are in perfect agreement with the experimental values and support the proposed structural model. Finally, the conductivity of RbLaF4 and the luminescence properties of Eu-doped LaRbF4 are investigated.26610

Double-resonance 7Al/29Si NMR spectroscopy and synchrotron diffraction experiments demonstrate that Si cations are incorporated in the formed Y3Al5O12(YAG) crystals on the 4-fold coordination Al site during crystallization. This has important consequences on the resulting microstructure of the YAG glass-ceramics.4222

In this work, we show that although 77Se has a low natural abundance (7.58%) and a wide spectral range, the sensitivity can be dramatically increased by using Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill (CPMG) trains of rotor-synchronized PI pulses during the detection of 77Se magnetization but may be affected by chemical shift anisotropy when the Magic Angle Spinning rate is not fast enough and by offset effects. The indirect dimension of the T2CPMG-resolved spectrum shows a strong influence of the J-couplings between naturally occurring 77Se pairs. The resulting spectra show that the structural model known as "chains crossing model" is not entirely suitable to describe the glassy network of the Se-rich compositions.24

By combining different solid-state 1H and 27Al one- and two-dimensional NMR measurements with first principles calculations we demonstrate that although globally ordered, the cation distribution in Al-rich Mg/Al-2 LDHs contains detectable amounts of Al clustering. Though small, the fraction of Al atoms misplaced with respect to the perfectly ordered cation arrangement (where Al-Al pairs are avoided) could be quantified. Their number is shown to counterbalance the number of misplaced Mg atoms for a Mg/Al ratio of 2, and to strongly decrease for reduced Al contents. This establishes that, although not favored, Al-O-Al linkages are not excluded in Al-richer LDH materials, a finding that will strongly impact our understanding of the local acidity of these materials and their widely exploited anion exchange and reconstruction properties.24

This makes it possible to probe inter-nuclear spatial proximity with limited risk of probe or sample damage from radio-frequency (RF) irradiation, and is fully appropriate for fast repetition rate offering sensitivity gains in favourable cases. Experimental demonstrations are supported by multi-spin numerical simulations, which points to new possibilities for the characterization of spin-system geometries.24

In the jolting frame, the shift modulation affecting the nuclear spin is removed, while the Hamiltonian corresponding to the RF field is frequency modulated and acquires a spinning-sideband pattern, specific for each crystallite orientation.24

By adjusting the amount of alumina added to demixing calcium silicate glasses, we managed to obtain transparent, but nanostructured, glasses with either silica-rich or calcium aluminosilicate-rich nanodomains of a controlled size down to 5 nm for compositions beyond the limits of the immiscibility domain. Therefore, the limits of the immiscibility domain of the SiO2-Al2O3-CaO ternary diagram must be extended to consider the presence of nanosized domains. An atomic-scale analysis of these glasses was performed using 29Si and 27Al nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments, showing that, as the size of the domains decreased, repolymerization of the silicon network and formation of aluminum-rich clusters were observed.148

For the zirconium halides, the 91Zr isotropic chemical shift covers a range of about 2000 ppm and shows a good correlation with Pauling’s electronegativity and ionic potential of the halogen. For the fluorozirconate samples, in which the Zr atoms exhibit various coordination polyhedra, increasing the Zr coordination number and the mean Zr−F bond length leads to an increased isotropic shielding. In the studied compounds the 91Zr quadrupolar coupling constants (CQ's) range from 10.6 to 44.7 MHz. For 6-fold coordinated Zr sites, a correlation between CQ and the shear strain of the octahedron is observed, and we investigate the relationship between the CQ and the distortion of the polyhedron for 8-fold coordinated Zr sites using different distortion criteria.13133012

Recent developments and advances in the reconstruction of anisotropic spin interactions among quadrupolar nuclides (spin > ½) in solid-state NMR shed light on a new opportunity to explore local connectivity and proximity in amorphous solids. Here, we report the 2D through-bond (J-coupling) and through-space (dipolar coupling) correlation NMR spectra for oxide glasses where previously unknown structural details about the connectivity and proximity among quadrupolar nuclides (27Al, 17O) are determined. Non-bridging oxygen peaks in Ca-aluminosilicate glasses with distinct connectivity, such as Ca-O-Al and Al-O-Al, are well distinguished in 27Al-17O solid HMQC NMR spectra. Both peaks shift to a lower frequency in direct and indirect dimensions upon the addition of Si to the Ca-aluminate glasses. The 2D 27Al double quantum MAS NMR spectra for Mg-aluminoborate glasses indicate the preferential proximity between [4]Al and [5]Al leading to the formation of correlations peaks such as [4]Al-[4]Al, [4]Al-[5]Al, and [5]Al- [5]Al. A fraction of the [6]Al-[6]Al correlation peak is also noticeable while that of [4,5]Al-[6]Al is missing. These results suggest that [6]Al is likely to be isolated from the [4]Al and [5]Al species, forming [6]Al clusters. The experimental realization of through-bond and through-space correlations among quadrupolar nuclides in amorphous materials suggests a significant deviation from the random distribution among framework cations, and a spatial heterogeneity due to possible clustering of framework cations in the model aluminoborate glasses.24

Surprisingly, many commonly used adiabatic processes in magnetic resonance perform well even though the adiabatic approximation does not appear to hold throughout the process. Here we show that this discrepancy can now be explained through the use of Berry’s superadiabatic approximation, which provides a framework for including the finite duration of the process in the theoretical and numerical treatment. In this approach, a slow, but finite time dependent Hamiltonian is iteratively transformed into time-dependent diagonal frames until the most accurate adiabatic approximation is obtained. In the case of magnetic resonance, the magnetization during an adiabatic process of finite duration is not locked to the effective Hamiltonian in the conventional adiabatic frame, but rather to an effective Hamiltonian in a superadiabatic representation. Only in the superadiabatic representation can the true validity of the adiabatic approximation be evaluated, as the inertial forces acting in this frame are the true cause for deviation from adiabaticity and loss of control during the process. Here we present a brief theoretical background of superadiabaticity and illustrate the concept in the context of magnetic resonance with commonly used shaped radio frequency pulses.24

This distribution is at the origin of the lineshape tailing toward high fields which is often observed in the MAS NMR spectra of quadrupolar nuclei in disordered solids. The Czjzek model provides an analytical expression for the joint distribution of the NMR quadrupolar parameters υQ and η from which a lineshape can be predicted. This model is derived from the Central Limit Theorem and the statistical isotropy inherent to disorder. It is thus applicable to a wide range of materials as we have illustrated for 27Al spectra on selected examples of glasses (slag), spinels (alumina), and hydrates (cement aluminum hydrates). In particular, when relevant, the use of the Czjzek model allows a quantitative decomposition of the spectra and an accurate extraction of the second moment of the quadrupolar product. In this respect, it is important to realize that only rotational invariants such as the quadrupolar product can make sense to describe the quadrupolar interaction in disordered solids.24

The sol preparation was optimised as a function of the final properties: morphology, texture, and proportion of thiol functions. A twosteps synthesis allows in positioning these functions at the pore surface as proven in particular by 1H solid state NMR. From Ag+ sorption experiments, we have also shown that the thiol functions are also homogenously distributed in the sphere’s volume and fully accessible to external chemical species. So these materials could be used for environment remediation or metallic nano-particle syntheses. In order to increase the stability and applicability of the materials, different post-synthesis treatments have been studied. A thermal treatment under mild conditions is enough to preserve most of the properties. From the hydrothermal treatments tested, the use of ammonia is shown to be quite interesting for the modulation of the properties. In particular, hierarchical porosities and high specific surface areas have been created. The high degree of ordering observed for the smaller pores is accompanied by a reordering of the surfactant polar head groups as deducted from 14N NMR. Lastly, the synthesis can be extended under some conditions to other functions or to higher proportions of thiol functions (up to 0.2).106

The structures of unirradiated and irradiated spinel samples have been studied by NMR spectroscopy, with 27Al magic angle spinning and multiple-quantum magic angle spinning experiments. The parameters of fluence and electronic stopping power have been compared. For 86Kr ions, the obtained spectra are modified by irradiation: we observe a rise of the amount of aluminum in tetrahedral sites and a widening of the lines associated with the different aluminum environments compared with those of the pristine samples. Site exchange in the cationic sublattice is then observed and can be quantified from NMR spectra, determining the inversion parameter. An inversion parameter of 0.77 is estimated for the MgAl2O4 spinel irradiated with 1013 Kr ions/cm2, for a value of 0.275 in the pristine samples. Moreover, a line attributed to aluminum in 5-fold coordination with oxygen is observed in irradiated spinel samples at the maximum fluence for krypton. These new aluminum environments can characterize a transition layer which could change toward an amorphous layer, increasing the electronic stopping power and/or the fluence.24

After ageing, the positive and negative electrodes were extensively washed with pure acetonitrile in neutral atmosphere to eliminate the physisorbed species. Then, the carbon materials were dried and transferred without any contact with air to be studied by XPS, 19F NMR, 11B NMR and 23Na NMR. Decomposition products have been found in the electrodes after ageing. The amount of products depends on the kind of activated carbon and electrode polarity, which suggests redox reactions of the electrolyte with the active surface functionality. Nitrogen adsorption measurements at 77 K on the used electrodes showed a decrease of accessible porosity, due to trapping of the decomposition products in the pores. Hence, the evolution of the supercapacitor performance with time of operation, i.e. the capacity decrease and the resistance increase, are due to the decomposition of the organic electrolyte on the active surface of the carbon substrate, forming products which block a part of porosity. The concentration of surface groups and their nature were found to have an important influence on the performance fading of supercapacitors.24

The MIL-96 (Ga) structure exhibits a three-dimensional metal– organic framework containing isolated trinuclear l3-oxo-bridged gallium clusters and infinite chains of GaO4(OH)2 and GaO2(OH)4 octahedra generating a hexagonal network based on 18-membered ring. The two types of gallium groups are connected to each other through the trimesate species which induce corrugated chains of gallium octahedra, linked via l2-hydroxo bonds with the specific -cis–cis–trans- sequence. The 3D framework of MIL-96 reveals three kinds of cavities (two of them have estimated pore volumes of 480 and 860 A˚ 3), in which are encapsulated free water molecules. The latter species are removed upon heating at 150 C. The MIL- 96 (Ga) compound was characterized by 71Ga solid state NMR at different magnetic fields (14.1 and 17.6 T). 71Ga spectra of MIL-96 (Ga) show the gallium exhibits relatively weak quadrupolar interactions compared to those observed in other MOF-type gallium carboxylates that have very strong quadrupolar interactions (MIL-61 and MIL-53).24

One- and two-dimensional high-field (17.6 T) high-speed (30 kHz) magic angle spinning experiments have been performed along with simulations of the spectra to quantify the amount of penta-coordinated aluminum present in those glasses as a function of composition. Very high-temperature experiments have allowed to follow selected samples from 2200 C down to 1700 C and hence to characterize the aluminum coordination state and dynamics in those liquids. The present study re-enforces the current view that "minor" species such as penta-coordinated aluminum are actually present in a considerable amount in aluminosilicate glasses, and high-temperature liquids at and above the charge compensation join. The high-field strength of Y3+ and La3+ reveal, for the first time in glasses, a different mean electric field gradient perceived by the tetra- and penta-coordinated aluminum environments. The movements responsible for the NMR relaxation of aluminum in the high-temperature liquid are shown to be uncorrelated with the movements responsible for the macroscopic shear viscosity. Results obtained both on glasses and in situ at high-temperature suggest a preferential localization of Ln3+ nearby tetra-coordinated aluminum species, with possible formation of tricluster and/or Ln3+ coordination changes.24

Representative samples are obtained from sols of different chemical composition and containing surfactant molecules (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB) and siloxane oligomers. The study of the morphological and textural properties leads us to complete the previous knowledge on these materials. We have shown that there is always a phase separation between the surfactant aggregates and the siloxane network at the nanometric level, but not at a microscopic or macroscopic level. In addition, the characteristics of the small interacting colloids (CTAB micelles and siloxane oligomers) determine the morphology of the samples, the proportions of non-ordered and ordered domains, as well as the spatial extent and the nature of the ordered phases. Two kinds of constrains exist at this respect: the rate of solidification during spray-drying, and the steric constrains imposed by the geometry of the ordered phases. From our results, we propose a mechanism of texture formation during spray-drying through two main steps: the evolution from an isotropic liquid to a non-ordered phase made of micelles and siloxane oligomers; and the transition from this non-ordered phase to an ordered phase by the spatial reorganisation of the micelles and their concomitant fusion into elongated rods.106

Nuclear magnetic resonance at high-field (750 MHz) was employed to investigate the geochemically and industrially important CaO–Al2O3–SiO2 system. We show that Al remains mainly in tetrahedral position in glasses, however, the presence of five-fold coordinated aluminum is the general rule throughout the ternary CaO–SiO2–Al2O3 system, except for the low silica percalcic region. The proportion of five-fold (AlV) and six-fold (AlVI) coordinated Al was quantified to determine the effects of composition overall the peralkaline part. Moreover our results indicate that Al may occupy more polymerized positions than Si. These two findings do put new questions to the modeling/understanding of these glasses and their parent liquids.24

Accordingly, a decrease of the unit cell volume of -TCP was observed with increasing sodium substitution. The distribution of sodium in the -TCP structure, as a function of the amount incorporated, was probed using 31P and 23Na MAS NMR and 31P{23Na} REDOR experiments. It was shown that an estimation of the sodium content in -TCPs could be obtained from the modeling of their 31P MAS NMR spectra. Moreover, the incorporation of sodium in -TCPs results in improved mechanical properties, without affecting the biocompatibility of the ceramics.24

NMR can thus provide a microscopic approach of the structure and dynamics of molten compounds by means of knowledge of different species existing in the melt, the average coordination, or nature of the first neighbors. We present high temperature NMR approach of molten fluoride systems of nuclear interest and description of the local structure around each nucleus, and its evolution with the composition.2588

Syntheses were achieved via the gel route, wet or dry processes. Room-temperature NMR spectra characteristics were analyzed as a function of the sintering temperature. The incorporation of Al3+ and S6+ ions, which finds expression in a noticeable line broadening, is shown to be effective above 1200°C. The 29Si chemical shift is unchanged upon doping, suggesting a mean SiO4 tetrahedra geometry identical to that in pure β-C2S. General trends on the structure adopted by C2S upon Al3+ and S6+ doping are also discussed.2588

Starting from a solution of aluminum nitrate and silicic acid, aluminum is slowly hydrolyzed at 80–100°C by in situ generation of ammonia. A silica gel is rapidly made, probably by a catalytic effect of urea, the base generator. This gel is then slowly digested by partially hydrolyzed aluminum species which break the Si-O-Si bonds and link to the gel by Si-O-Al bonds. Progressively a clear colloidal sol is obtained and the colloidal particle size continues to decrease toward aluminosilicate species where the silicon atoms are in a single environment and may be linked to three hexacoordinated aluminum atoms and a hydroxyl group, by reference to natural imogolite. When the hydrolysis of aluminum is nearly complete, these particles are cross-linked and a final gel precursor of mullite is obtained. This gel is chemically very homogeneous and crystallizes to mullite at 980°C. The structural evolution, from the first gel to the ceramic, has been followed by 27Al and 29Si liquid- and solid-state MAS NMR spectroscopy.106

The kaolinite-to-metakaolinite transformation has been monitored by solid-state NMR and X-ray diffraction. The metakaolinite product is an amorphous material with no resolved XRD pattern and is based on a disordered polymerized silicon/aluminum network in which aluminum preferably occupies four- and five-fold structural positions in the ratio 60% AlVI, 30% AlV, and 10% AlVI. This complex dehydroxylation process has been viewed at different scales, with the aluminum NMR tracing a site-by-site destructon of the octahedral sheet and the silicon NMR and XRD following a more rapid destruction of the longrange order.24

The spectra consist of single, narrow lines (100 to 200 Hz FWHM), indicating that rapid chemical exchange among molecular species occurs in the liquids. Isotropic chemical shifts vary linearly with composition, becoming more shielded with increasing Al2O3content. This is most likely due to an increase in the average nearest-neighbor coordination of Al, as the proportion of higher coordinate Al species (AlO5 and AlO6) has been observed to increase with alumina content in glasses along this join. This is also in agreement with ion dynamics simulations of liquids along the CaO–Al2O3 join, which show the average Al coordination to range from 4 at low alumina content to 5 for Al2O3liquid. Correlation times for 27Al spin–lattice relaxation estimated from the NMR line widths are in agreement with shear relaxation times determined from experimental viscosity measurements. This may indicate that oxygen exchange between neighboring aluminate polyhedra is a key component in the mechanism for viscous flow. Viscosities determined from oxygen ion diffusion coefficients via ion dynamics simulation agree well with extrapolation of experimental data, in further support of this. We have also obtained high-temperature Raman spectra of CaAl2O4 and Ca12Al14O33 glasses and liquids up to 1928 K. The liquid spectra contain structure similar to those of glasses, indicating that the aluminate liquids consist of AlOn polyhedral units on the vibrational time scale, rather than simple ionic species.24
